American Curl Cats
The American Curl breed was first discovered in 1981 in california by Joe and Grace Ruga. There were two original kittens named Shulamith and Panda which were both female. After Shulamith had her first litter Joe and Grace realized that the ears were unique and began diligent research and test breedings which eventually led to the official recognition of the American Curl in 1986. The American Curl is also the first breed to be admitted to the Championship Calls as a breed with two coat lengths.
History of American Curl Cats
Physical Characteristics
An American Curl is characterized by its unusual ears, which curl back from the face toward the center of the back and skull, which should be handled carefully as the cartilage is fragile. The American Curl is medium sized weighing about 5-10 lbs and doesn't reach maturity untill 2-3 years. They are stong and healthy and do not have genetic defects that many purebred cats today have.
American Curl kittens are born with straight ears that within 4 months curl back. Show cats have between 90-180 degree curl where common house American Curls may have near straight ears.
Temperament
The American Curl is a curious and companionship breed. Being very people orientanted they tend to enjoy helping with projects around the house. They are even-tempered and intelligent, yet they retain their kitten-like behavior through adult life. They are commonly quiet only voicing when something is wanted or needed. American Curls get along with other animals quite well.
